Dialing in Results: Why Every Horse’s Magnesium Journey is Unique

At Performance Equine Nutrition, our mission is to balance horses both mentally and physically, one horse at a time. We know that every horse, training program, and diet is different , which is why we prioritize quality conversations and personalized support over a one-size-fits-all approach.

Supporting the Individual Horse: A Journey with Judy

(Note: Names have been changed to protect client confidentiality.)

Recently, we’ve been working closely with an educated horsewoman named Judy and her 10-year-old Arab mare. Lovingly called a “pocket rocket,” this mare is used for both trail riding and dressage, but she has a history of being resistant, balky, and prone to spooking. These behaviors often stem from the “muscle burn” and tension associated with magnesium deficiency.

The Progress and the Pivot

Based on the mare’s size and workload, we initially started her on two scoops of MagRestore twice daily. The results were encouraging: the spooking decreased significantly, and she seemed much happier. However, she was still shaking her head and resisting work at the trot and canter.

When progress plateaus, we have to ask the hard questions:

  • Is this a lingering pain response?
  • Is it a habit developed from previous muscle cramping?
  • Is she guarding her body in anticipation of discomfort?

Navigating Variables: Calcium and Gut Health

In speaking further with Judy, two critical factors came to light: her water has high calcium content, and she is feeding a gut supplement containing slippery elm. Because calcium and magnesium compete for absorption, and certain supplements can affect uptake, we decided to adjust the protocol to three scoops twice daily (as long as manure stays normal).

The goal is to allow this mare to realize her body will not cramp or burn during exertion, helping her rebuild trust in her own physical comfort.

Expert Guidance is Just a Call Away

It often takes a few adjustments and follow-up conversations to get a horse perfectly “dialed in”. Our products are rooted in equine physiology , and we are here to provide the direct-to-owner support needed to navigate these complexities.

If you feel your horse’s progress has plateaued or you have questions about their specific diet, please reach out. We are committed to the long-term health and performance of your partner.
